Murdick’s Fudge-sponsored run attracts more than 500 participants
A little rain didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits at the 20th annual Run the Chop Challenge on July 4th. A grand total of 517, ranging in age from 10-over 20, took part in the four-mile loop around the West Chop of Martha’s Vineyard. The big turnout topped previous highs prior to the pandemic.
“For many people, including my staff at Murdick’s Fudge, the Run the Chop Challenge is as much a part of the 4th as fireworks,” said Mike McCourt, general manager of Murdicks Fudge of Martha’s Vineyard. “It’s great to have so many participate and even better to raise money for very worthy causes, the Boys & Girls Club of Martha’s Vineyard and the Martha’s Vineyard Rotary and its programs that support kids.”
With the 517 participants, the Run the Chop Challenge raise more than $15,000 for programs that support children on the Island.
Other big winners for the day included runners from the nine divisions for age groups ranging from 10 to 80. Winners for group, male and female, received a gold medal. Winners included: Hayden Gray, Marian Johnson, Shiloh Logan, Rowan Bixler, Sarah Tully, Stephanie Thompson, Jo Gardner, Eliska Suryckova, Rachel Shanor, Carol Gayman, Jo Anne Arone, Hayden Gray, Joey Holland, Andre Latina, Ryan Sawyer , Michael Palmer, Ken Thayer, Garrett Moss, Brian Baker, Steven Katz, and Jim Austin.
Of course, the really big winners were those participants who received boxes of Murdick’s Fudge.
“Another part of the tradition is me handing out boxes to people who run in the race,” said McCourt. “Just a nice way to say thank you for supporting the Run the Chop and helping us help kids.”
